A note about USB ports and Programmers using WinXP.

The USB port must be powered and active at all times to maintain communication, this is the same for any device that uses the USB Port in particular Programmers that may not appear "active" all the time.
winXP (Vista?) has a timeout function for all USB ports, when the system detects no activity on a particular port it will power that port down. This timeout function is not consistent and depends on the device you are using.
When this happens, the driver is still loaded, but the port is "inactive" according to the system, so XP gets itself into a tangle and usually requires rebooting.
This can be frustrating to say the least!

To avoid this please disable the timeout feature by going to "Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>Universal Serial Bus Controllers>" and right click on the USB Root Hub (the port) you are using (or just do all ports if you are not sure which one).
Select "Properties" then the "Power Management" Tab. Uncheck the box "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power".
Doing this will make your programming much more enjoyable.
Note: There may be the occasional communication problem that will require you to restart the software and even reinstall the USB driver but these should be rare and depend on your system setup.
